Previously, U.S. Citizens did not need a passport to visit Mexico. You could visit Mexico without a passport, but the issue now is getting back into the U.S. without a valid passport. As of 2010, the U.S. government has required all U.S. citizens to carry a passport when beyond the border limits of Mexico. This includes minors, toddlers, and all adults. While you may be able to get into Mexico without showing proper identification, you will need it when you want to return to the U.S.

You can visit Mexico without a passport book if you have a passport card. You can use a passport card to visit Mexico via land or sea. If you choose to fly however, you will need a passport book. The passport card is not valid for flying into or out of Mexico.

Travel Mexico and Visa Requirements

While millions of travelers enjoy Mexico every year without any issues at all, it’s always best to do your research before any travel abroad. Also, make sure to know where the closest Embassy or Consulate is when you travel overseas.
