Previously, U.S. citizens did not need a passport to visit Mexico. You could visit Mexico without a passport. However, the issue now is getting back into the United States without a passport.

In 2010, the U.S. government began requiring all U.S. citizens (e.g., minors, toddlers, and all adults) to carry a U.S. passport when beyond the border limits of Mexico. While you may be able to get into Mexico without showing proper identification, you will need it when you want to return to the United States.

You can use a passport card to visit Mexico by land or sea.

If you choose to fly however, you will need a passport book.

The passport card is not valid for flying into or out of Mexico.

You must have a passport card or passport book to visit Mexico. You may:

  1. Visit a passport acceptance agency and get your passport in 4 to 6 weeks.
  2. Use a passport expeditor and get your passport in 2 weeks or less.
