Passport Processing Times Explained

passportandusflagThere are two ways to get a passport. You can apply for routine passport processing or expedited passport processing. Passport processing depends on how fast you need your passport.

Routine Passport Processing Times

There are many different ways to get a U.S. Passport. The most common way is through routine processing. Routine processing is when you visit a Passport Acceptance Facility (usually a post office of county clerk office). Routine passport processing takes anywhere from 4-6 weeks.

Expedited Passport Processing Times

If you need a passport faster than 4-6 weeks, you can get it expedited. Expediting through the post office is usually possible. Check your local post office for more information. Expedited processing at the post office is three weeks. Regardless of which expediting option you choose, you must pay an additional $60 expediting passport fee. Please visit our Passport Fees Explained page for more information.

In order to get a passport faster than 3 weeks, you have two options. The first option is only available to you if you live in a major city and can get an appointment at a Regional Passport Agency. Expediting at a Regional Passport Agency is usually processed within a week, with some locations offering passports the same day or next day.

The second option is to use a private expediting service. Registered with the U.S. Department of State, a private expeditor can secure your passport in two weeks or less. The processing times for expediting service are explained below.

Private Expediting Passport Processing Times Explained

Fastport Passport is one of the most trusted private passport expediting companies operating today. Processing over 100 passports a day for over ten years, they’ve perfected the process to get a fast passport. Understanding the processing times can help you make an informed decision if their service is right for you.

Processing times are based on when they receive the documents at their headquarters in Brooklyn, New York. For instance, if you send your documents to Fastport Passport and they are received on Monday, the documents will be submitted to the government the following business day (Tuesday) unless other arrangements are made. If you need a passport within 24 hours, please make sure you speak with Fastport Passport directly to make sure your documents are correct and your passport will be ready for you immediately. Remember that return shipping is usually next day/overnight, so expect another business day when choosing an expedited option. If you need a passport by Friday and today is Monday, your best bet is 1 business day or 2-3 business days. You will not get your passport on time if you choose 4-5 business days and you’re leaving on Friday. For additional assistance, please feel free to contact us.
