You can complete a Passport File Search by completing the Request for File Search and Verification of U.S. Citizenship.
Passport File Search
NOTE: If you need to request a passport file search, you may click on the link above for the PDF file.
Generally, you will use the passport file search form when you lose your passport and cannot locate your birth certificate. In other words, passport applicants use the passport file search to verify US citizenship when applying for a new passport.
In the event your old passport book or card shows up as a record in your search, you may use it as proof of US citizenship.
Important to realize, you’ll need to submit the passport file search application form with your supporting identification documents when you visit a Passport Acceptance Agency.
Next, the fee to use this form is an extra $150 – made by check to the U.S. Department of State. Your fee for the passport file search is non-refundable.
Processing Time for File Search
When you submit a file search with your U.S. passport application, it’ll take approximately 6 weeks with routine passport processing. Otherwise, you can use the expedited passport service, which takes between 2-3 weeks.
Lastly, you may use an authorized passport expeditor like Fastport Passport and get your U.S. passport within 2 weeks, or as quickly as 24 hours.
NOTE: Remember, there is no guarantee your file search will show any pertinent records.
