The NEXUS Travel Program is for frequent travelers between the Canada and U.S. borders. As part of the Trusted Traveler Program, participants are pre-approved travelers that are considered low-risk. Members of this program can avoid the long lines at the land, air, and sea border entry points. Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, the NEXUS card has been approved as an alternative to the passport for air, land, and sea travel into the United States for US and Canadian citizens.
NEXUS Travel Program members are issued a NEXUS Card that is valid for 5 years. This is a photo-identification, proximity Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) card. Members will either present their NEXUS card or have their iris scanned and make a declaration. A Nexus member can use their Nexus card as proof of citizenship, though at airports you must have your passport as well.
The NEXUS Travel Program Eligibility
Citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada who pass criminal history and law enforcement checks are eligible for the NEXUS Travel Program. However, individuals may not qualify if they:
- Are inadmissible to the United States or Canada under applicable immigration laws;
- Provide false or incomplete information on their application;
- Have been convicted of a criminal offense in any country;
- Have been found in violation of customs, agriculture, or immigration law;
- Fail to meet other requirements of the NEXUS program.
The United States and Canada must BOTH approve an individual’s application. If an applicant is denied by either country, the applicant cannot be a part of the NEXUS Program.
The NEXUS Travel Program Fees
NEXUS applicants must submit the one application and pay a $50 application fee. Applicants under the age of 18 can have their fee waived. Applicants may apply through the CBP Global On-Line Enrollment System (GOES) website. Qualified applicants are required to travel to a NEXUS Enrollment Center for an interview. Once approved, they will be issued a photo identification card, mailed within 7-10 business days. The NEXUS Travel Program helps speed up the process for low risk travelers, as well as allows United States and Canadian border agencies to focus on potentially higher-risk travelers and goods.
To replace a NEXUS Travel Card, you must pay a $25 replacement fee for lost, stolen, or damaged cards.

U.S.–Mexico Border & SENTRI
NEXUS members who are citizens of the United States may utilize SENTRI lanes when entering the US from Mexico by land, but must be traveling in an approved registered vehicle. The SENTRI Program requires members to register their vehicles into the program. This involves a thorough inspection by Customs and Border Patrol, whereas NEXUS has no such requirement. Regardless of whether in an approved vehicle or not, the NEXUS card is a WHTI compliant document, and may be used in any standard lane from Mexico into the US as proof of identity and citizenship. Pedestrians can use dedicated SENTRI lines for expedited entry into the U.S. from Tijuana at the San Ysidro border crossing. For more information about the SENTRI Program, please visit SENTRI.
U.S. Global Entry
NEXUS members can use their NEXUS Card at Global Entry kiosks in the United States. This allows for expedited clearance at Global Entry equipped airports in the United States and US CBP Preclearance facilities. The Global Entry kiosks are located at the 20 busiest U.S. international airports by international passenger traffic. Travelers are not required to use the NEXUS card in the kiosk, but are advised to carry it on person. There is no additional cost to use Global Entry, and it can be used for the duration of the NEXUS membership.
NEXUS members may use TSA PreCheck on all participating airlines for domestic US flights by entering their Customs and Border Protection PASS ID / Trusted Traveler number from their NEXUS card into their flight reservation information or into their frequent flyer account.
For NEXUS toll-free information (U.S. and Canada) call 1-866-NEXUS 26 (1-866-639-8726).
