By all means, you may read about the NEXUS Travel Program below.
Firstly, the NEXUS Travel Program is intended for frequent travelers between the Canada and U.S. borders. Participants of the Trusted Traveler Program include pre-approved, low-risk travelers.
Members of this program can avoid the long lines at the land, air, and sea border entry points.
Importantly, under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, the NEXUS card is an alternative to the passport for air, land, and sea travel into the United States for U.S.- and Canadian citizens.
Notably, the NEXUS Card is valid for 5 years, and as a proof of citizenship. NOTE: Also, you’ll need your passport at airports.
Specifically, it is a photo-identification, proximity Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) card. Importantly, members may either present their NEXUS card or have an iris scanned and make a declaration.
NEXUS Travel Program Eligibility
Citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada who pass criminal history and law enforcement checks are eligible for the NEXUS Travel Program. However, individuals may NOT qualify if they:
- Are inadmissible to the United States or Canada under applicable immigration laws.
- Provide false or incomplete information on their application.
- Have been convicted of a criminal offense in any country.
- Have been found in violation of customs, agriculture, or immigration law.
- Fail to meet other requirements of the NEXUS program.
Important to realize, the United States and Canada must BOTH approve an individual’s application. Moreover, if either country denies you, you cannot be a part of the NEXUS Program.
Introduction to the Nexus Travel Program
Next, you may apply through the CBP Global On-Line Enrollment System (GOES) website.
Subsequently, qualified applicants must travel to a NEXUS Enrollment Center for an interview. Next, you will receive a photo identification card within 7-10 business days once approved.
Notably, the NEXUS Travel Program helps speed up the process for low risk travelers, as well as allows United States and Canadian border agencies to focus on potentially higher-risk travelers and goods.
NEXUS Travel Program Fees
NEXUS applicants must submit the application and pay a $50 application fee. Moreover, applicants under 18 years old can have their fee waived.
But, you must pay a $25 replacement fee for lost, stolen, or damaged cards.
NEXUS Travel Program Allowances & Prohibitions
Permissible items in a NEXUS lane
- Alcohol within a traveler’s personal entitlement (must be out of country of residence for 48 hours)

- Gifts up to $60 each (into Canada) or up to $100 (into the United States)
- Or, any reasonable amounts of personal effects

U.S.–Mexico Border & SENTRI
NEXUS members who are citizens of the United States may utilize SENTRI lanes when entering the United States from Mexico by land in an approved registered vehicle. Also, members of the SENTRI program must register their vehicles with a thorough inspection by Customs and Border Patrol.
Regardless of whether you’re in a permissible vehicle, the NEXUS card is a WHTI-compliant document. Consequently, you may use it in any standard lane from Mexico into the United States as proof of identity and citizenship.
NOTE: Generally, pedestrians may use dedicated SENTRI lines for expedited entry into the United States from Tijuana at the San Ysidro border crossing.
U.S. Global Entry
Firstly, NEXUS members may use their NEXUS Card at Global Entry kiosks in the United States for expedited clearance at Global Entry equipped airports in the United States and U.S. CBP Pre-clearance facilities.
Secondly, it is not a requirement for travelers to use the NEXUS card in the kiosk, but you may want to carry it on your person. In addition, you are not subject to extra fees for Global Entry. On the other hand, you may use it for the duration of the NEXUS membership.
In addition, NEXUS members may use TSA PreCheck on all participating airlines for domestic U.S. flights by entering their Customs and Border Protection PASS ID / Trusted Traveler number from their NEXUS card into their flight reservation information or into their frequent flyer account.
