On this page, you’ll learn how to get a routine passport.
There are many ways to get a U.S. passport, but the most common way is routine passport processing. Routine passport processing takes between 4-6 weeks, though it could be longer (or at times even shorter).
You can normally submit routine passport applications through your local passport acceptance agent, which is often your local county clerk or post office, library or government office.
How to Get a Routine Passport
If you want to know how to get a routine passport, simply visit your local passport acceptance facility. There you will find the forms and documents you need to apply for a passport. In addition to your photo ID and proof of citizenship, you may want to bring your passport photos as well. However, many acceptance facilities provide passport photo services.
For step-by-step instructions on how to get your U.S. passport, see New Passport Processing.
NOTE: Bring proof of name change if your name is different than what is shown on your proof of citizenship documents.
How to Get a Routine Passport Even Faster
If you’d like to get your passport faster than the 4-6 weeks routine processing time, you may request the expedited passport service.
Expedited passport service is a rush passport service to get your passport faster than routine processing.
Generally, the acceptance agent can offer a 3-week turnaround for expedited passports, but there are no guarantees. Also, you must pay an additional $60 for the expedited government fee.
How to Get an EXPEDITED Fast Passport
You can secure a passport even faster than the 3-week service.
If you live in a major city and you can get an appointment at a Regional Passport Agency, you may be able to secure your passport in a few days. Otherwise, you can also use a private expediting courier service like Fastport Passport for a guaranteed (and even faster) passport processing.
Fastport Passport can process U.S. passports and visas within 2 weeks, and even as fast as 24 hours!
