Can I get a passport with a felony conviction?

Yes. If you have been convicted of a felony, you can still get a U.S. Passport. There are some reasons that the U.S. Department of State will deny a passport application. If you are currently on probation, or you owe child support payments, you should not apply for a passport yet. Once you are not on probation or parole, you will be eligible to apply for a passport. Once you no longer owe child support payments, you will be eligible to apply for a passport. You will need to contact the department that handles owed child support in your State. They will advise on your eligibility for a passport. If you are in arrears for owed child support, expect that you will not be eligible for a passport until it is cleared up.

If you were convicted of international drug trafficking or international arms trafficking, you may also be denied a passport. These cases are reviewed individually and approved or denied by the U.S. Department of State. If you feel like you still have felony passport questions, we recommend that you visit a Regional Passport Agency in person.
