You will need your social security number in order to check your passport status. If you are using a private expediting service, they will likely have your passport much faster so you may not need to even use the status check. There are two ways to get a passport. You can apply for routine passport processing or expedited passport processing. Passport processing depends on how fast you need your passport.
Routine Passport Processing Times
Routine processing is when you visit a Passport Acceptance Facility. An acceptance agent is needed to verify the signatures and identity of the applicant. This is usually the post office or county clerk. Routine passport processing takes anywhere from 4-6 weeks.
Expedited Passport Processing Times
If you need a passport faster than 4-6 weeks, you can get it expedited. Expediting through the post office is usually possible. Check your local post office for more information. Expedited processing at the post office is three weeks. Regardless of which expediting option you choose, you must pay an additional $60 expediting passport fee.
In order to get a passport faster than 3 weeks, you have two options. The first option is only available to you are traveling in the next five days and if you live in a major city and can get an appointment at a Regional Passport Agency. Expediting at a Regional Passport Agency is usually processed within a week, with some locations offering passports the same day or next day.
The second option is to use a registered passport courier service. Registered with the U.S. Department of State, a private expeditor can secure your passport in two weeks or less.
