Canada Passport Requirements
So, you’re going to take a trip to visit our friendly neighbors to the north, eh?
Its close proximity to Niagara Falls, skiing in Banff, and the trendy cosmopolitan cities of Vancouver and Toronto are just a few of the reasons to visit. Also, Canada is less than 5 hours away from Chicago by car and even faster by train.
Read below for the specific Canada Passport Requirements to successfully make it across this international border.
Visas & Passports
Importantly, U.S. citizens do not need a visa if they are traveling as a tourist for less than 180 days.
On the other hand, Frequent travelers are encouraged to join the NEXUS trusted traveler program, which provides members with a special travel card to move through the border crossings quicker. However, simply having proof of citizenship and a photo ID is all an average traveler or tourist needs to take a trip to Canada.
Proof of Citizenship Examples
Required Travel Documents (you only need one):
By Land or by Sea:
- Valid U.S. Passport
- Valid U.S. Passport Card
- NEXUS Card
- Enhanced Drivers License
NOTE: Notably, exceptions to the requirement applies to U.S. citizens under 16 years old (or under 19 years old, if traveling with a school, religious, or other youth group) who may instead present a certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or naturalization certificate.
Traveling with Minors
In addition, you may only travel to Canada with a minor who is not your own child or whom you do not have full legal custody if you submit a notarized affidavit of consent from the minor’s parents with travel dates, copies of their state-issued IDs, and both parents’ names. See Passport Parental Consent.
Of course, if you need your passport quicker, contact an authorized third-party expediting company like Fastport Passport.
